Wintery Mix

2012 has arrived at the Brown Gingham Cabin with a dusting of wintry white. Well, not as much as this pic shows, but enough.  With the new year there are some new things..................................

I have found a very pretty vintage pattern for a  crisp white crocheted coverlet. You can find the instructions for free at my website HERE in a few days. Wouldn't it make a great pair of curtains too!

I love this party. It should include posts to showcase items you work on (sorry no selling sites allowed), your craft space, organization tips, tutorials, supply tips, anything that'll be inspiration, creative, and fun.

Brown Gingham Vintage Inspired Sandwich Glass

Vintage textiles always lend flair to tabletops and decor accents. When I find a new vintage peice sometimes it just...tells me what it wants to be......I am not crazy..... Haven't you ever heard someone say that a painting 'Speaks to them'... or a sculptor say that a slab of marble told him what was inside? Well, old bits of thread or fabric tell me what they wish they were.  Cake. Alright, alright, stop laughing.

                                This 1940's hand-tatted doily
said it looked like sugar roses and minted sugar leaves.

So, I took a pedestal cakeplate and painted it the palest of green found in the leaves and afixed the doily to it.                                            

I placed a clear glass serving plate on top so it wouldn't get soiled. Here's another view..............................

I love the way it looks like a lattice on top. Now, see, doesn't it look like icing on a cake? I call her,   Rosy

a cakeplate too. So, I painted a glass pedestal cakeplate a fresh white, afixed the doily, and covered with a clear glass serving plate. This is, Confection.

My newest serving piece was inspired by a 1940-50 barkcloth curtain panel.........................

I used a flower and geometric patter as an applique, affixed it to the glass plate that was painted a rich chocolate color, and placed a clear glass plate on top...........................

You may be wondering why I call it Brown Gingham 'Sandwich' Glass.....the textile is sandwiched between the pieces of glass. They are actually two separate glass plates. The clear plate holds your baked goods or hors d'vours and keeps the decorative plate below clean.

It's beginning.............................

........to look a lot like Christmas...........It snowed. I really dreaded hearing those words on the tv weather and typing those words in this post, since last winter's horrible storms, but we awoke Saturday to a sugar coating on the trees and grass. It been snowed all day. We had about 4". The streets are so warm it just melted on them.....couldn't wait for the ice to set up overnight...which it did....yippee. Anyway, It seems the dread has turned to Christmas spirit.

Usually we have all our Christmas Decorations up outside, like the Snowman tree shown here from last year,  but with Jim's infection, we only have the outside lights up. He brought the living room tree down Saturday, but we still have to bring the decorations up. Slowly, but surely we'll get it all decorated and then I can post those pics.

Sunday Jim said I needed to get out of the house, so he took me to the Antique Mall for lunch and to look for Chirstmas presents. We walked the acre up to our parked van...still icy on the drive.....and off we went. The Ohio Valley Antique Mall was packed with shoppers and the vendors booths were filled to the brim. 

As we walked thru I had to giggle cause as I was looking I spied things some of my blogger friends would have jumped at. A couple of sets of N-O-E-L ceramic angels...I know one of you said you were looking for a set, but for the life of me I can't remember who, so, if you want let me know, I'll go over and pick em up for you, they were $24.95 and you can pay me back...  A box of shiny brights in a Woolworth box for Beth of ELizabeth Holcombe, Whimsies and Words, lots of bottlebrush trees for Ms. Bingles at Ms. Bingles Vintage Christmas, some great Flour and sugar sack fabrics for Janet at Primrose Design and barkcloth for Kimberly here at Niesz Vintage Home and Fabric. Lots and lots of Fiestaware, dishes, crystal, and flatware, that would make all my Tablescape Thursday pals over at Between Naps On The Porch squeal with delight. But, the biggest thing I saw that made me think of all my Rednesday friends was this.........................

LOL...first I saw all the aluminum cannisters on the top, I have the set already, but I like to see how much

they are now. Then I looked down and realized it was red and white for in my kitchen, but alas no room for such a big cabinet....but wait I looked closer and then I saw it..the ME iconic cherries!!! The vendor was there and must've caught the 'Aw' look on my face as I thought of all of you and said he could do better than the $149 price if I wanted to take it home.....I thanked him, but I had to pass and asked if I could take a pic to share with my blog pals. I was so excited to finally a ME something to share....even if only a pic.

New Ideas

Wow!!! First I'd like to say thanks so much for the participation over at the Etsy Cottage Style Blog..Market Monday. There are well over 50 vendors linked to the blog. We'd thought a few of you'd join in, but this is great. It is definately going to be a monthly event. Remember this market begins on Monday, but we stay all week! So keep coming back or join on in...things change daily.


I have a new Etsy Site...Apronation....It's a all aprons. Vintage and vintage inspired designs. It's where one will be able to show off her apronature, that is her, apronistics. Are you an elegant entertainer. The table is fully set for a 5 course dinner....only the finest cut crystal and fine china?....Then this is apronistically for you...

This buttercream organza is from the 1930's. It has flocked scallops, as well, as flocking creating the botanical print. The glitter that outlines the flowers and created buds on the foliage is original. Once a bright gold, the glitter has taken on a golden copper patina with age. I embellished with vintage 1940 floral motif buttons. Couldn't you imagine the white lace dress under this apron accented by pearls, a little gold, and of course some diamonds...ringing a bell for the next course.

Or, when you're hosting the next luncheon, you want to be comfortable, but look dressy.....how about those trusty black flats, a pair of black capris, a black tee with a lightweight black shirt, accenting it all with this....

  a 1940's tablecloth apron with a wonderful carnation, fern fronds, and black lattice design. I hand-embroidered some of the ferns and carnations to make them pop. I've also shown the Baking Cookbooklet published by 'Carnation' Milk Co. With ads from the Burns and Allen Show. Remember, all my aprons come with a vintage cookbook or other relating vintage reading material.

You're having a few friends over for a little get-together? Well, how about setting a little table on the patio with this vintage

1940's Rose Bouquet tablecloth,

 filling these with refreshing lemonade

and donning this matching 1940's

apron. The red and white sheer fabric pop with vintage rick-rack and rose appliques created by using cut-outs of roses from a matching tablecloth that was ruined.

Whether you're elegant and formal in style, fun and classic, or informal and whimsical there is an apron that fits you apronistically and shows your apronature!
